SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC PATRIOTISM

Since 1994, beyond the World Trade Organisation Agreement, the tariffs have been becoming weaker and weaker, therefore obsolete to protect a sector of the economy (an average of 3% all over the world). Establishing customs barriers to protect its economy has become quite impossible nowadays. On the other hand, protecting consumers and citizens is fundamental.

Products that pollute the environment, or products that are hard to recycle will probably be forbidden in the next decades. The sustainable development will become the next instrument of protectionism, remembering the old idea of economic patriotism.

It is important for companies to take care of these new norms, that could become the new customs barriers. The main problem will the international control of these norms. The creation of phony Eco-labels appears obvious.
