CLEAN ENERGY: A GOOD HOPE

A report released by Cambridge Energy Research Associates, concludes that investments in green energies will be pushed, not only by the oil shock, but also because of a greater demand. What makes today different from the 1970’s is that people are worrying about global warming, thus they will be ready to pay a clean energy more expensive. “The report projects that rising private and public investment in clean energy could surpass $7 trillion by 2030″. In 2007, $125 billion was invested worldwide. This is 20 percent more than 2006. The investment will be focused on wind, geothermal and solar power, bio-fuels, nuclear energy and techniques to capture and store carbon emissions.

Such investments will be necessary to absorb the stronger energy demand in new industrialized countries. It is also interesting to note that nuclear power has become a clean energy as we focus now on reducing CO2 emissions. Twenty years ago, classifying this energy as clean would have created a revolution.

ALBERTA SO FAR FROM KYOTO

oil sands in AlbertaPremier Ed Stelmach announced the plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The long term goal is to reduce emissions to 14% below 2005 levels by 2050. The Strategy is more based on CO2 capture and storage than developing renewable energy. Investments will be weak in this sector. This goal is far from the objectives set by the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE). The NRTEE advised Alberta to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions of 24% by 2020, and 66% by 2050.

This decision is directly linked to the oil lobby, very powerful in Alberta. Oil provides wealth, and a high level of life to people from this State. The main problem caused by this policy is global for Canada. If the country does not reach its objectives, it would put Canada in a difficult situation reliance on other countries.

Ironically, since January, The Tobacco Reduction Act bans smoking in all public places and workplaces, and prohibits smoking within five metres of a doorway, window or air intake of a public place or workplace. That will certainly not help Alberta to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, nor people to breath a cleaner air.

ETHANOL: A GOOD SOLUTION?

images.jpgVERA SUN ENERGY Corp. (NYSE:VSE) produces ethanol from corn, in Nebraska and Ohio. They’re taking advantage of the “Energy Independence and security act” that would allow the United States to reduce their dependence on foreign oil. The USA also want to develop the energy diversity. On top of this, ethanol does not produce CO2 emissions. We consider that emissions are compensated by the sequestration when the corn grows.

On the other hand, University of Minnesota studies showed that ethanol production monopolizes 20% of US corn crop. Thus, the corn prices have doubled. In addition to that, eating corn that we grow creates less greenhouse gas emissions than burning them in engines.

For all these reasons, biofuels appear as a short term solution for the environment, and for investors. Oil, biofuels and food prices are linked. Vera Sun stock fell 35% since early January, following Monsanto (NYSE: MON) and Pacific Ethanol (NASDAQ: PEIX). Short-term opportunities exist, but it appears dangerous to bet on biofuels, especially if the recession endures, and the oil price continues to fall.

Day4 Energy (TSX: DFE) innovates in British Columbia

Day4 Energy has received from Germany its first batch of proprietary photovoltaic production machinery. The Vancouver based Company capacity will go from 12 mega watts to 40 mega watts per year. Day4 will enhance its productivity, proposing high-quality solar modules, with higher performance, better aesthetic appearance, and lower cost.

Silicon is becoming rarer, therefore more expensive year after year. A run to the innovation, and the efficiency, has already started between competitors. The implementation of the Day4 patented Electrode technology constitutes good news in this crucial period for the renewable energies in Canada, a day after the release of the report on “Canada’s transition to a low-emission future”.

More Cross-Border Investments by Venture Capital Funds in the EU

January 7, 2008-Brussels

The European Commission proposes measures for more cross-border investments by venture capital funds. Brussels wants to finance and stimulate innovation of small and medium-sized enterprises. These companies are very dynamic, but due to their size finding investment dollars is a challenge. Once implemented, this project will benefit renewable energy and clean technology companies throughout Europe. The European Commission expects these sustainable capital funds to invest one to five million Euro in 2008.

The EU has already established good dispositions in the environmental sector. However, the amount of investment is still trailing behind the objectives stated by the directives.

Al Gore and the IPCC win a Noble Peace Prize

What a great push forward this will be for the Global Warming effort that is now gaining strong momentum. Al Gore has won a 2007 Noble Peace Prize for his film The Inconvenient Truth.

Ole Danbolt Mjoes, chairman of the prize committee, said the award should not be seen as singling out the administration of President George W. Bush for criticism.

“A peace prize is never a criticism of anything. A peace prize is a positive message and support to all those champions of peace in the world.”

Just another major reason why people should be thinking about where they are putting there investment dollars(Into polluters or GreenTech?), and how those dollars are effecting the world.

Renewable Natural Gas?

Today Environmental Power Corporation(AMEX:EPG) announced that they will begin deliveries of Renewable Natural Gas to another great green company, Pacific Gas & Electric(NYSE:PCG) a California utility leading the way in green power choices(And have a pretty nice stock chart as well!)

I will be writing a post dedicate to Renewable Natural Gas in the coming weeks, to uncover the details on this less publicized Green technology as part of a series on the many different emerging Green fuels.

Briefly, Renewable Natural Gas is formed from Biomass, then upgraded to the quality of regular Natural Gas to allow for distribution through established Natural Gas channels. Renewable Natural Gas is also known as Sustainable Natural Gas or SNG.

Profile of a Young Green Investor

Meet Christiana Wyly, a 25yr old American who was recently profiled by Kiplinger magazine in an article titled “Green Investing is the Next Big Thing”.

This article is a great insight into the new attitudes that a new generation has about investing in green technologies and alternative energies. It seems that many people now in there 20’s and 30’s have decided that they want to invest in companies that are having a positive impact on the world’s climate(Think Solar Power) rather than a negative one(Think Big Oil).

An important quote for any serious green investor:“Venture capitalists and other large investors who are pouring money into green enterprises aren’t doing it for charitable purposes, Peck says. “They have no intention of accepting inferior returns.”

It is very encouraging to see that attitudes are changing and people like Christiana are getting the story out, way to go green!

“It’s not next year or next decade, it’s now.”

A somewhat stark comment from Australian scientist Tim Flannery on the state of the worlds climate, adding “What the report establishes is that the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is already above the threshold that can potentially cause dangerous climate change,”

Tim is talking about the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report that is still in draft form and has not yet been released, making all of Mr. Flannery’s comments his own speculation. Three previous reports released this year by the IPCC have provided Mr. Flannery the basis for his statements.

I consider this a fairly large development, the fact that someone is coming out and saying that we are way farther ahead and in trouble over climate change than we previously thought. I could take just one report to really shock people and cause some real panic.

I don’t think we are near a panic stage at all yet on climate change, and hopefully we don’t have to enter a panic stage to get the majority of businesses and individuals to get behind the Green movement.
